Home Decor -DIY ideas

Flipping through pages of house keeping/ interior magazines, while waiting for my turn at salon, i have always desired to posses one of those swanky homes, done to every detail. Rich, fashionable and very contemperory. But if there was only one way to decorate your home....n that is the best part about decorating your own home. It does not have to be like any of those magazine houses, but still can be equally fashionable and personal.

A home is where your heart is...n all u need to put in a little mind to what your heart says and lo you get a tastefully decorated living space. You can give the professiobal designers a run for their money if you just keep few simple things in mind.

1) Dont kill it :- never over do. Remember you are decorating a house and not designing  a film set. Keep it Clutter free. DO NOT ever buy things that you will not require in future. They will just add to junk that you pile in that "small room" under the stair case. Sometimes just rearranging the furniture and accesories can give that required look to the room.

2) Green Shoots :- nothing and i repeat nothing that is man made can replicate n replace the excusite craftsmanship of nature. Live plants not only add a spark to the dead space but help help create those monotony breaking visual effect thats soothing at the same time. Take professional help while choosing the plant that best suits the light conditions of your room. And yes one or multiple plants.. you can never go wrong with the numbers.

3) They do it with Mirrors:- Even the best home designers rely on the use of mirrors. They not only tend to add that virtual space but also multiply the volume. Reflections in the  mirror adds spatial layers to the room. While big unintertupted mirrors add depth to the living space, there reflective monotony can be quite intimidating in a small sized room and may give a sense of loss of privacy. Under such conditions, its best to break..i,e use smaller mirrors. One can really experiment with mirror size, their placement with respect to each other n their frames. Speciality frames lile wood, brass etc can be used to achieve that "perticular" effect. Hand made craft frames will add the personal touch.

4) Corner Seat - like its famous counterpart in the theater, its that special zone in the room that has been given special attention. One may use combination of articles like a mirror/ plant/painting or something as abstract as a lamp made out of a broken pottery to highlight one corner/ place in the room. It helps to concentrate energies and the decor theam.

5) Let there be light :- and finally top all your hardwork with adequate lighting. While there is no substitute for natural light, in absence of it, one may provision for enough light to give room a comfortable aura. Big windows facing sun and recieving enough light can act as a canvas for your creativity. Pull out that lace from your grandmons old cupboard and embelish a sheer curtain with it. Experiment with various fabrics to create the magical effect of light n dark. In rooms that do not recieve direct light, lamps, both pedestal n hanging can be used. Turn old bottles, brassware, antique china into lamp/shades and bring the sun in your room.
